A Guide To Drainage Systems

By Scott Rodgers

The quantity of sewage generated in a house through daily activities involving the use of toilets, showers, faucets, washing machines and dishwashers is not little. It is thanks to your drainage system that all this sewage doesn't accumulate in the house and cause a massive nuisance.

The drainage system has a house-wide presence. Your roof has a drainage system as does your basement. Even your deck, yard and outdoor garden have it. Your home is connected to the municipal sewage treatment plant via the drainage system. Leaks and pooling of water are problems associated with a bad drainage system and this could potentially ruin your home.

Inside the house, the drain-waste-vent system is what basically takes wastes away from fixtures. The vent system and the drain system are the two separate albeit interconnected (by traps) systems that make up the drain-waste-vent system. For sewage to flow through pipes of the drain system smoothly, it requires ventilation offered by the bent system.

Apart from the drain-waste-vent system, is the drainage system itself, which being present right outside the walls of the house, attaches the house to the municipal sewage system. This is divided into Surface, sub-surface and gravel trench systems and some types of drains are French drains and trench drains.

A gutter dug surrounding the outer walls of the house makes up a French drain and this is meant to divert water away from the house. Some modifications to it involve perforated pipes that are covered by gravel. These pipes collect water that runs above as it has holes.

Channel or trench drains are drains are long narrow ditches made of concrete and carry large volumes of sewage. These are more common in sub-urban areas where many houses are built in close proximity and are not this common in rural areas. The underside of these drains can house utility lines and cables.

Gravel trench drains are basically just trenches that are covered with gravel for the sake of good aesthetics. They are not very practical to have as they get easily obstructed. Bare French drains describe a surface drain and perforated-pipe French drains are half sub-surface drains. Sub-surface drains themselves have underground pipes.

Because clogged and leaky drains cause a variety of issues ranging from bad odors to stagnated water and health hazards, it is very important to ensure that the drain-waste-vent system in the house as well as the drainage system just outside the house is sound before investing in a new house.
