Green Home: Organic Solar Cells Greener Than Silicon Cells

By Cameron E Cruise

Scientists in the solar industry are always trying to find ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their environmentally friendly photovoltaic technologies. Solar electric authorities note that there has been a significant spike in green educational programs and solar researched aimed at doing just that. Photovoltaic technologies are created in order to create products that help people live a sustainable life. In doing so, scientists are also always striving to find ways to make photovoltaic technologies more Eco-friendly in and of themselves.

Solar Cells
Solar companies believe that making solar technologies more sustainable in and of themselves means creating photovoltaic products that use organic materials. They say these materials should be easy to collect, fabric, and manufacture on a mass scale using minimal energy. Most photovoltaic systems are made of silicon solar cells. Silicon cells are the industry standard and they are highly effective when it comes to absorbing light and converting it into usable green energy. However, they are out greened by a newer type of solar cell.

Silicon solar cells may be the standard but scientists have also been working on developing organic solar cells that are made of various carbon compounds--commonly known as plastics. These cells are flexible, lightweight, and easy to apply to just about any material. Most significantly, recent studies have found that organic solar cells are greener than inorganic (or silicon) solar cells.

A Greener Solution For The Future
The study found that it takes much less energy to produce organic solar cells. This is important because it could impact the price of solar panels. It could decrease the cost of solar panels in the future and make solar systems much more affordable for homeowners. In addition to this, organic solar panels would have a big impact on the environment because of the materials used to make them and because it takes so much less energy to create them.

Organic solar cells are however still in the process of being researched. When the "kinks" are worked out, incorporating organic solar cells into new photovoltaic systems will have a big impact on the solar world. Currently, organic solar cells only produce approximately one-fifth of the energy that silicon solar cells do. However, some new findings have pinpointed why the loss of energy is occurring, so it could just a matter of time before scientists figure out how to get organic solar cells to generate just as much energy.
