By Edward Watkinson

There are two sister islands on the Caribbean namely Antigua and Barbuda. It has been a while since Antigua has been holding the title of gateway to the Caribbean, being the largest Caribbean island. The variety is intriguing, increasing the allure of the island.

Water sports are freqeunt and diverse in Antigua, such as windsurfing, kite-surfing, sailing, snorkelling, fishing, boating, and kayaking. In this context, the Antigua Sailing Week is very famous that is also the third largest sailing regatta in the world. The barrier reefs, and wrecks are ideal venues for exploration. One of them is the Andes wreck, which is around eighty years old. The Indian Town also has some caves that can be explored, the expanse of which, extends all the way to Guadeloupe.

Crystal-clear turquoise water characterizes the unspoilt nature of the beaches, being a prime attraction for tourists there. However, the fun does not end just with beach lovers. The natives of Antigua have a generally friendly air to their attitude, making the tourists feel comfortable, and welcome. This becomes further reason for enjoying this holiday to the very fullest. The couples, and independent travellers are also frequent visitors, as this place is equally desirable for them as a holiday spot. As a matter of fact, Antigua has been the best wedding destination two years in a row.

All through the year, the exhibitions are another aspect that provide the desirable degree of allure for the visitors. The Jeep safaris count as one of the planned ventures that are present. These safaris take the travellers to those villages, and harbours, which could not be reached otherwise. Sometimes helicopter rides are available as well, the ride being too eventful, as it provides a perfect view of the spectacular lava fields of Montserrat.

Antigua also has the Antiguan Recreation Ground that is utilised for test matches, although the list of games is not limited to cricket alone. The island has two golf courses as well. Netball, Football, Volleyball, and Basketball are other seasonal sports that are played at Antigua.

Other attractions on the island are inclusive of Frigate Bird Nature Reserve along with Nelson Dockyard as well as Walling Forest Nature Trail, and also the Devils Bridge, the last one being verily fun and exciting. The bridge is a natural construction of limestone rocks, with a natural blowhole, which shoots seawater in the air.

As for cultural attractions, there is the Betty Hope Sugar Plantation, which qualifies as the colonial capital of St. John, and Fort James. Then there is Shirley Heights that provides a platform for those who enjoy long walks along the beautiful span of landscapes.
