Helping The Planet Through Carbon Offset

By Melody Carter

Carbon offset is helping to protect the world from the catastrophic effects of ecological degradation and global warming by its mission to reduce carbon emissions in large industries and manufacturing entities, as well as at an individual level.

Carbon offset is a way of decreasing the emission of hazardous greenhouse gases through different means like continuous reforestation initiatives, alternative and renewable energy supply etc. The greenhouse gas emission limits for developed and developing countries are governed by the Kyoto Protocol, an internationally accepted pact, which was ratified in 2005 by almost all nations of the world.

The Protocol says that entities releasing a huge amount of carbon dioxide must restrict their CO2 emissions to prescribed levels, or else pay a carbon tax, which is an environmental tax on hazardous emissions, or alternatively buy carbon credits certificates that can be transacted in the market. Carbon credits, which were conceived prior to carbon offset, are the most convenient and inexpensive option for manufacturing businesses emitting more than the permitted limit of greenhouse gases, with one credit equal to one tonne of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. Large organisations are catching up with the global carbon-neutral campaign and purchasing carbon credits to make an impact on customers, investors and business partners.

Another novel method, carbon offset, has opened up an excellent economic chance, particularly in the developing countries, as the scheme provides smooth funding for eco-friendly projects that are designed to help decrease the overall carbon footprint on the planet. It helps in encouraging alternative and renewable energy choices like tidal energy, solar power etc and other environment conservation initiatives like reforestation.

Apart from the industries, even individuals are helping the environment by purchasing carbon offset and motivating others to do the same. Carbon offset can be conveniently purchased online through one of the several providers, but care must be taken to ensure that your money is channelled to the correct projects.

However, we must remember that buying carbon offset does not take away our responsibilities, and that all of us can perform a vital role in reducing our carbon footprints by making minor changes to our everyday lives. Minor steps like turning off electrical devices and appliances when not in use, replacing fossil fuels by cleaner ones like biodiesel, and making use of LED lighting and low-energy bulbs can go a long way in decreasing global emissions.

Carbon offset is yet to find its place in an average person's vocabulary. Mass awareness on the issue through extensive education is needed to bring us a few steps closer to a clean and green environment.
