Which Omaha Hi/Lo Hands To Let Go

By Michael Monroe

With such a high variety of different Omaha Hi/Lo hands it can be extremely hard to figure out which hands to play and which ones to let go. There are a lot more hands that should be let go then hands that should be held.

Whether you are playing Texas Holdem or Omaha Hi/Lo you should only be in to see the flop about 20% of the time. If you are in more than that then you are likely playing your game too loose. Before you begin a game of Omaha Hi/Lo you should make sure you have a full understanding of which hands you need to fold.

Regardless of whether you are playing Omaha Hi/Lo or Texas Holdem, if you are truly playing your cards right then you should only be in for the flop about 20% of the time. A lot of players make the error of trying to play nearly every hand, thinking that they are going to hit the proper cards on the flop. These players usually spend most of their time losing.

For those who do not think this way and do want to play the best poker they possibly can; there are some hands that could definitely save you some money if you knew that they should be let go. One type of hand that is often misleading in Omaha Hi/Lo is a hand like 4567.

While many poker players will believe this a good hand because of the chances to catch a straight, the reality is that there isnt much of a chance at all. Most of the time you will not get a straight out of this hand, or end up with a low hand either.

Big Pair Lookout

Another type of hand that a lot of people automatically like are the big pair hand regardless of what they come with. A hand like KK28 off suit is not a quality hand. You are going to almost always lose with this hand unless you hit a king and get another pair along with it and manage to boat up.

Even with AA, you have to have cards to go along with the AA. Double suited hands with a high pair are a decent place to begin, especially if the other cards along with the pairs are low. It is a big misconception to think that just because you have a high pocket pair in Omaha that you are good to go.

For the most part you should be on the lookout for cards that work well together. This means you should look for cards that are suited together since they will give you a better chance at winning. With suited hands you will have more options available. This will give you better odds of winning the high hand as well as the low hand, so you dont only have to attempt to win the low hand. Players who only try to win on low hands are not going to be as successful.

Once you have mastered which hands need to be folded and which ones can be played you will find yourself winning a lot more. You will also want to improve your ability to read the other players and make good evaluations to give yourself better odds of winning. All of these things will come together and you will find that winning at Omaha Hi/Lo isnt as difficult as you thought it would be.
